I have been making Matterport 3D tours since 2016. When I first started the only option was to purchase a Matterport Pro camera for almost $4000 to do it with. Matterport has recently released an new piece of hardware. The Matterport Axis sells for $89, It is a motor mount that you attach to your smart phone.
I wanted to find out it the Axis is actually a viable alternative than this expensive camera I use so I put to the test in a small real estate listing. This home I did it in is just under 1000 sq ft.
Matterport Axis with an iPhone 12
Matterport Pro 2 Camera
Actual assessed size of space is 978 sq ft
The Axis took me a total scan time of 34 Minutes to complete and calculated 887 sq ft
The Matterport Pro 2 had a total scan time of 20 minutes and calculated 926 sq ft.
So right off the bat without even looking at the quality of the scan the Pro 2 Camera was more accurate and it was quicker. Keep in mind that this was a 1000 sq ft place, If this had been a 2000 sq ft home it would have taken an additional 30 minutes and may have been off 100 sq ft or more, 4000 sq ft and an additional 1 hour and 200 sq ft off, so on and so forth. Also for the times keep in mind I am very experienced, a novice should plan on at least doubling my times.
As for the quality of the scans the Pro 2 scan is much cleaner without as many glitchy lines. The color is more natural and the lighting has a better range. I think the Pro 2 is the clear winner with the quality.
My conclusion:
If you are ok sacrificing some quality, your time and accuracy then get the Axis and do it yourself.
If you require better quality and higher accuracy and want to keep your time for other activities then you should hire someone.
